Privacy policy
Last updated: October 10, 2026
Strider ("Strider," "we," "us") is a free virtual walking app. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Strider is completely free, has no ads, and we never sell your personal data.
Information we collect
Account information. When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the name and email address your provider shares with us, used to create and secure your account. If you sign in with Apple, we also keep a token from Apple until you delete your account, so we can disconnect Strider from your Apple ID when you do.
Profile information you provide. Your display name (username), birth year, chosen city, and unit preference (kilometers or miles). Birth year is used only to confirm you meet our minimum age of 13 — it's never shown to anyone else.
Activity and fitness information. Once you connect Apple Health or Google Health Connect, we read your daily step count and walking distance — your step count powers leaderboards and the dashboard, and your walking distance is used directly to track your progress on the routes you start. This is a distance measurement from your health app, not real-time GPS — we never track your real-time location.
Activity history. We keep a record of when you start and complete walks, reach milestones along them, and where you finish each week's rankings, to show your Recent activity and your friends' (see below). We also keep the notifications we've shown you.
Notification settings. If you allow push notifications, we store an identifier for your phone (a push token) so we can send them, and whether you've switched them on or off.
Social information. If you add friends, we store that connection. If you set your profile to Public, your username and step count appear on the Global, Country, and City leaderboards.
- What we don't collect: precise or real-time location, your contacts, browsing history outside the app, or payment information — Strider has no purchases.
How we use your information
- To run the app itself: routes, progress tracking, the finish celebration, leaderboards, and friends.
- To confirm you're old enough to use Strider (13+).
- To keep the app secure and prevent abuse.
- For example, there's a 30-day minimum between changes to your leaderboard visibility, so it can't be used to peek at rankings and the profiles reachable from them, then hide again.
- To email you. There are two kinds: essential emails (required notices about changes to this policy or our Terms, or important security or service issues), which you can't opt out of, and optional emails about new features or updates, which you can turn off anytime in Profile.
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell it to anyone, ever.
What other users can see about you
- Public profile: anyone can see your username and step count on the Global, Country, and City leaderboards. Private: you're excluded from all three, and you can't view them either.
- Anyone who knows your exact username can search for you and see a limited profile: username, country (not your exact city), total steps, and walks completed.
- Friends (by mutual request) can always see each other's full profile — full name, username, join date, city, total steps, and walks completed — on the Friends leaderboard, regardless of your Public/Private setting.
- Friends (by mutual request) can also see your recent activity: when you start or complete a walk (and which walk), and when you finish in the top 3 of a weekly ranking. Your other milestones and lower rankings are visible only to you.
- If someone sends you a friend request, you can see their full profile before deciding whether to accept.
Who we share information with
We use a small number of service providers to run Strider:
- Supabase, our database and backend host.
- Google and Apple, for sign-in, and for reading step and distance data from Health Connect / Apple Health once you connect it.
- Expo, and Apple or Google, to deliver push notifications to your phone. They receive the notification's text and your phone's push token. Expo also sends us app updates, and sees your phone's app version and operating system when your phone asks for them.
- An email service provider (such as Mailchimp), to send you the essential and optional emails described above.
We don't share your information with anyone else, and we never sell it.
Links such as “See on map” open Google Maps outside Strider. We don't send Google any of your information when you tap one; Google's own privacy policy applies from there.
Your choices
- Leaderboard visibility: choose Public or Private in Profile at any time (a minimum of 30 days between changes).
- Push notifications: switch them off in Profile, or in your phone's settings, at any time.
- Promotional emails: turn these off anytime in Profile. You'll still receive essential emails, such as required notices about this policy, our Terms, or service and security issues.
- Friends: remove a friend at any time from their profile.
- Health data access: manage or revoke Strider's access to your step and distance data anytime in your phone's health settings. Doing so stops your steps and route progress from updating, but the rest of the app — browsing routes, friends, leaderboards, and your existing history — still works.
- Account deletion: delete your account anytime from Profile. This immediately and permanently deletes your account and everything tied to it — routes, progress, steps, and friendships — with nothing kept afterward.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, everything is permanently removed right away — we don't keep a backup copy or retain any of it afterward.
Children's privacy
Strider isn't intended for anyone under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no method of storage or transmission is completely secure.
Changes to this policy
If we make a material change to this policy, we'll update the date above and let you know in the app.
Attribution
City data used for choosing your city and for Country/City leaderboards comes from GeoNames (geonames.org), used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License (CC BY 4.0).
